While sitting around 18 Wheels of Justice HQ, our saucy and hard working receptionist Kit, was busy chewing gum, filing her nails and texting all at the same time, when suddenly, the phone rings.  Now, it is a rare occurrence around here when the office phone rings. We receive tons of emails and often get eggs thrown at the front window at HQ (mostly as a result of my recent article on “The Great Driver Sign on Bonus Hoax”), but phone calls, they are far and few between.

I was right in the in the middle of my afternoon meditation, when Kit stormed in my office and woke…interrupted my meditation.

“The phone rang!” she exclaimed.  “What, what, whaaat? How long have I been meditating?  Just calm down, have a seat, and let me think about this for a minute…”

“Now, what time did the phone ring?”

“One-thirty this afternoon” Kit replied.

“Did you answer it?”

“Yes” Kit said proudly.

So far so good, it’s good to know when something like this happens, all the training we do around here just kicks in automatically.  Now, for the tough questions:

“Who was it?”

“Tim Yochum with Quest Liner, he said he will be here in ten minutes and wants to talk to you” Kit said excitedly.

Quest Liner. I know exactly who Quest Liner is, it’s a tanker carrier in Iowa, and I wondered why he was stopping by.

“Kit, hand me my hat and boots and then watch out the window and see if he has any eggs with him when he gets out of his car…”

I better dust off my computer and look up Quest Liner on “The Google” and see if I can find out what is going on before he gets in here…

Let’s take a closer look at Quest Liner… Here’s what we found out:

Quest Liner has its roots in Blue Grass, IA where the McCoy Group acquired Gless Bros. and the Blue Grass Truck Wash in 2007.  As part of the McCoy Group, Quest Liner is a sister company to Foodliner (the largest US food grade tank truck service provider) and Truck Country Truck Dealerships. Quest Liner has grown to be a $24 million organization, with more than 140 tractors and 260 trailers. In addition, the company employs more than 170 people across their terminal network and at their corporate headquarters in Dubuque, IA.

Quest Liner is a liquid bulk carrier specializing in transporting hazardous materials, including alcohol, solvents, acids and other specialty chemicals. Specialized tank trailers are available for specific products and trucks run in local, regional, and national areas in the U.S., as well as Canada.

Everything looks good so far; Tim is walking in, no eggs in sight.  Let’s find out a little more about Tim and Quest Liner…

“Welcome, Tim!  It’s good to meet you and glad you’re here.  What brings you?”

“You invited me here last week for an interview…” Tim replied, with a look that reminded me of my 7th grade teacher when I would give her answers in class.

“Of course, I remember now, things have been really busy ‘round here lately, with the meditating and all.  Have a seat and let’s talk about Quest Liner…”

Tim, what is your background and how long have you been with Quest Liner? Why did you decide to work there?

I joined the Quest Liner in May of 2007. I have been in transportation since 1983 starting as a seasonal Christmas hire for UPS in IA. After a few years working as a UPS Driver I moved into a management position. I had the opportunity to work in a variety of departments, travel on numerous assignments, relocate quite a few times, and enjoy a terrific experience with a great company. The last assignment for this farm boy from Iowa was an Operations Manager in Denver, CO

I was looking for an opportunity to move back to Iowa and be closer to family when I met Greg McCoy and a few members of Quest Liner’s team. I felt a connection that matched my values as an individual concerning safety, people, and service so I accepted the job as General Manager for Quest Liner. The decision to join the Quest Liner team has been an outstanding choice for me personally and my family. I am proud to be part of a growing organization that values people with a strong safety and service culture.

Quest Liner has maintained the independent spirit of the original Gless Brothers, while having the financial strength of Foodliner behind it.  How has this relationship been an advantage?

Job security with opportunities to haul a variety of different products for businesses throughout the US and Canada. Financial stability allows us to operate newer equipment that operates safely, efficiently, and looks good. With profitable business growth we also provide personal opportunities for advancement.

2.) How much tanker experience does a driver or operator need?  Do you offer training?

No previous tanker experience required, but it does help. With 2 years of safe OTR experience we provide training to help you be successful at your job. Our training department has a Director of Training, Regional Trainers, and local Driver trainers available to assist you. With numerous drivers having 5, 10, and many over 20 years of experience with Foodliner and Quest Liner we have skilled teammates willing to help new employees.

3.) What stands out about Quest Liner?  Why do you have such a good reputation in our industry?

The quality of our equipment is top notch. We take pride in both the safe operating condition and physical appearance of our trucks and trailers. Safe, dependable, on-time delivery by a uniformed, professional driver is how we represent our customer’s products. A "Can do" attitude from top management thru final delivery is something our customers have come to expect from Quest Liner. We work hard to provide transportation solutions for our customers and then we fulfill our service commitment.

4.)  How often will drivers and operators get home?

Fleet Managers and Terminal Managers are coached to work with the individual driver in order to meet their work-life expectations. Our goal is to provide a work-life balance that allows the driver quality home time with an income to meet their needs. Open communication between driver and management is the key to a successful relationship.

5.)  I noticed you have a substantial list of benefits for both owner operators and company drivers.  What are the top five in your opinion for Drivers?  For Operators?

Medical/Prescription/Dental/Vision and Disability benefits give you peace of mind that you are protecting your family today and an excellent 401K Plan with a very good company match that allows you to take care of your family in the future. Our pay package is very competitive with an incentive plan that allows a driver to earn up to an additional 4.5% of their gross pay each quarter. Weekly paychecks with electronic statements via email or web based are available Tuesday afternoon prior to electronic deposit on Friday. Electronic logs allow you the peace on mind that you are legal to DOT regulations and Fleet Managers know what you have available for working hours.

6.)  What areas are you hiring in?  What if an owner operator or driver has additional questions, how can he reach you and who should he ask for?

We welcome applications from anywhere. Our business is growing and we have opportunities throughout the US. You can contact our Recruiting office at 1-800-251-9569 if you have additional questions. If they can not answer your questions our Recruiting office will contact me and I will call you back.

Thank you, Tim, for stopping by, it’s refreshing to meet someone so well informed and passionate about what you do.  It speaks volumes about Quest Liner’s interest in hiring good drivers and being committed to their success with your company.  Quest Liner has certainly gained our respect and interest.  Have a safe trip back…
